Art Education
The Art Education major at Messiah College leads to a B.S. degree with teaching certification
(k-12) from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. It is a demanding program with
128 credits necessary for graduation, but one that students have found very rewarding and
an excellent preparation for a teaching career. The program combines the strength of two
different areas, studio art and education.
The Art Education major will complete the exact
curriculum as the studio major which includes choosing a concentration (as listed above) and completing the senior exhibition experience. In addition art education majors take the
required education curriculum and art education curriculum as required by the Pennsylvania
Department of Education (PDE) who has accredited this major. The Art education major
will matriculate through the major finishing with their professional semester of student teaching in the spring of their senior year. Students in this program often take summer
courses during their four years, so that they will not have to carry a maximum load of credits
most semesters. Art Education majors are also required to take the appropriate Praxis
tests required by the PDE.
