Studio Art Major Brochure Printable PDF
The Studio Art major at Messiah College leads to a B.A.
degree. The major is designed to provide you with both breadth and depth. In
the student's first year they begin the curriculum with a five course foundation
sequence of Art Foundations and two drawing courses, followed by a selection
of two foundation design courses. These foundational studies are finished in
the sophomore year. Students also begin a survey of the history of Western
Art, which is normally completed by the junior year. In the sophomore year,
art
students begin to select individual studio courses from four areas: Graphics
and Technology (computer graphics and computer art), Two
Dimensional Design (drawing, painting, photography, and printmaking), Mixed
Media Studies (ceramics, paper processes, sculpture, and textile arts)
and Interdisciplinary
Studies, where students combine course work from the above concentrations
with course work from other majors. In the senior year, studio majors prepare
an exhibit of work in their area of study. By graduation, art students should
demonstrate a knowledge of several areas of the visual arts, and depth in one.
