Companionship Ministries

"By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:36

Sometimes the best service you can offer is time spent with someone else!  Through Companionship Ministries you can visit older adults at several retirement and care facilities in the area or join a team of women who visit a women's halfway house in Steelton.  Consistantly hanging out with someone who does not get many visitors can be the best service you can give!

Community Partners:

  • Bethany Village: This team visits with the residents of Bethany Village Retirement Center each week and helps lead a group activity in the hospitality room. This group from Messiah College visits residents on Monday evenings from 6-8pm.

  • Maplewood Assisted Living: This team visits with residents living in a memory support neighborhood of Maplewood Assisted Living each week to build friendships with the older adults. This ministry leaves from Eisenhower Circle at 6:15pm on Wednesday nights.

  • Messiah Village: The volunteers in this team form a one-on-one relationship with a resident of Messiah Village and visits with the resident each week. Groups from Messiah College visit residents on Thursday nights from 6:15 - 8:00pm.

  • Promise Place: Promise Place was conceived in the hearts of three women who began entering the Dauphin County prison to conduct weekly ministries of hope, faith, and love with the women prisoners. From that mission, Promise Place has grown to meet the needs of paroled women who have no home, no job, and little or no help with their children and families. In October 1997, the PROGRAM for Female Offenders, Inc. assumed responsibility for operating Promise Place and implemented programming for women in need. Women released from prison have an opportunity to reside in a safe and supportive environment and receive various programming, all geared toward preparing them for a second chance at rebuilding their lives. Promise Place offers the residents structure and teaches responsibility for reintegration back into society as productive members of the community. Residents are assisted with GED preparation, job readiness, job search and referrals, drug and alcohol treatment, etc. Residents also participate in community service and small group activities during their 6-12 month stay. Student volunteers at Promise Place focus on building relationships and accountability through small group activities, including quality devotional and story time and prayer requests. This is a great opportunity for Messiah students to offer the women love and support and show them that there are people caring and praying for them. These relationships are not only beneficial to the women at Promise Place, but for the Messiah students who are touched as well. Groups go out on Thursdays, 6-8pm, leaving from Eisenhower Circle.
