- CEEED: The Center for Employment, Education and Entrepreneurial Development (CEEED) offers a number of opportunties for students to volunteer to help with English and ESL classes in the Harrisburg area. These include:
- English Classes:
English Classes: Adult English classes are available for people that have moved to the area from other countries and need to learn/ improve their English speaking skills. They offer both beginner and intermediate classes.
- Beginner ESL Classes: Student volunteers can help migrant workers, their families, and other adults learn English by assisting with classes. No Spanish skills are necessary. The teacher, Monica, will have lessons prepared and can go over each one before class. Opportunities exist to help in teaching the class. Approximately 30 students attend, and there may be the option of helping watch children that come to the class as well. Choose one night to help each week.
- Intermediate ESL Classes: These classes are for adult students who have become more proficient in their English skills. The focus is more on grammar and usage rather than vocabulary. There are approximately 10-15 students that attend regularly. Helping in this class involves practicing conversational skills and assisting with projects.
- Trips from Messiah are made on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30-8:30pm.
- Danzante Community Arts Center: This arts center is the only Hispanic arts and cultural multi-disciplinary organization in Central Pennsylvania that offers arts programs for community children, adults, and schools throughout the Region. Volunteers will help with activities ranging from writing, drawing, music classes, and dance. Trips are made Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays from 3:30 - 6:30. - Migrant Education Program: This program provides opportunities for Messiah College student volunteers to host middle school and high school students on campus. These school students are a part of the Migrant Education Program in the Chambersburg area and visit campus for a retreat each fall and spring. Volunteers generally meet their student the evening the retreat starts, hosts them in their rooms overnight and hangs out with them on campus until brunch the following day. The group activities are paid for by Outreach Teams, as is transportation if college vehicles are used. This semesters retreat will be held on April 1-2, 2011.
