Each year, Messiah College takes a day off celebrate and serve together as a community in our community in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There are a number of Ministries in the local area that need our help. Paxton House(7 participants) 2001 Paxton Street Harrisburg, PA 17111 Description: Paxton Ministries is a Christian, non-profit community home serving adults who may be challenged with social, mental, or emotional needs. They provide long-term, affordable housing, food, and support. Paxton Ministries ministers to the whole person, regardless of one's ability to pay, and helps with the development of life skills and resources to live as independently as possible. They also offer a supportive, family-like environment where love and compassion are a way of life - where dignity and self-worth are recognized in every individual. Messiah College has partnered with Paxton Ministries since 1981. The Agapé Center for Service & Learning sends Outreach Teams and Service Learning classes weekly to partner with Paxton Ministries in service to the community. Description: The Silence of Mary Home is a safe haven for young people from the Allison Hill (inner-city) neighborhood of Harrisburg to come live, be discipled, or just hang out. The director, Sue, is the "mom" of the home. Any person that comes to live in the home, whether short-term or long-term, becomes part of the loving "family." The home is known in its community for its bright murals and as a place of hope where residents can get help for their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. Messiah College has partnered with the Silence of Mary Home for over two years in weekly service through the Agapé Center for Service & Learning. Through this ministry, Outreach Teams and Service Learning classes have reached out to the Allison Hill community.

Allison Hill Community Ministry(8 participants)

Description: AHCM is housing in the Derry Street United Methodist Church and serves the Allison Hill community with an after school program and food pantry.

Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church(20 participants) 2217 Derry Street Harrisburg, PA Description: Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church is a growing, multi-cultural, city church of approximately 300 people who are making an intentional effort to reach the community for Christ. “As God has enabled us to think about the future of our church, we see him leading us to become a body of people from different walks of life. We envision African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and people of European descent worshipping together and fellowshipping freely with each other.” This is the second year Messiah College has partnered the Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church for Dr. King Community Engagement Day. The church reaches out to the community regularly through its food pantry as well as its children, youth and adult ministries. (Service activity: learning about the vision of the church as it relates to MLK’s vision for first hour, followed by painting and assisting with renovation of youth area) |
