As Martin Luther King Jr. once observed, “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.” The Agape Center for Service and Learning provides the modern forum for each of us to live and learn in community, despite and through our own brokenness. With a global focus and a foundation of faith, Outreach Teams recognizes the needs in our own backyard. Real hunger, genuine pain and torn families are present in the greater Messiah College campus community, and Outreach Teams strives to follow Jesus in addressing their needs. In Mark 5, the Champion of our faith is called to heal the daughter of Jairus, one of the leaders of the synagogue and among the most respected members of society. He embarks upon this quest and is soon approached by a woman identified as “unclean.” Jesus then pauses in his original quest in order to heal her. This story is not remarkable for the miracle, but because of the powerful lesson about the meaning of true love and the need to transcend social barriers in order to follow the Golden Rule. Thus, Outreach Teams follows the call of our faith to follow Christ and treat each person that we come across as a neighbor, as a friend, and as a brother or sister in creation. Through the investment of time, Outreach Teams facilitates the formation of relationships that we might experience life together and become all that God intends us to be. In Him
