Youth Clubs

Coordinator: Vanessa Brubaker

Abba's Place

This team works with the New Jerusalem Christian Church in inner-city Harrisburg by providing an evening children's club. Through a loving environment, the volunteers witness the saving message of Jesus Christ, give a positive example of Christian living, and provide a place of security unlike the dangerous streets of Harrisburg.

New Hope Ministries

This ministry center helps families enduring crisis. Families hear about the children and youth program because they have come to the center for some form of financial assistance. The program is designed for children and youth (grades 1-12) that come from low-income families. They are "at risk" of early drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, delinquent behavior, dropping out of school, and sexual promiscuity. New Hope desires to make a difference in their lives now--before they are too heavily influenced by the negative environment around them. Presently teams volunteer at both the Dillsburg and Mechanicsburg New Hope Centers. The Dillsburg New Hope Ministries Center youth tutoring team ministers Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:00-6:00pm. The elementary tutoring program ministers Thursdays from 6:30-8:00pm.

Silence of Mary Home

The Silence of Mary Home is a safe haven for the young people from the Allison Hill (inner-city) neighborhood of Harrisburg to come live, be discipled, or just hang out. The director, Sue, is the "mom" of the home. Any person that comes to live in the home, whether short-term or long-term, becomes part of the loving "family." Messiah students can serve as friends and mentors to these kids. Groups visit the home every weekend to lead a Bible club. Relationships of mutual encouragement are formed as the volunteers and kids praise God, read the Bible, play games, and just talk together. The group visits the home for a few hours on Saturdays and welcome others to join them as they show God's love to those in the home.

Young Life

Young Life is a relational ministry to high school and middle school students that seeks to introduce kids to the person of Jesus Christ. There are about thirty Young Life leaders from Messiah, Dickinson, and HACC. Currently Young Life is active in five area schools (Cumberland Valley High School, Cumberland Valley Middle School, Boiling Springs High School, Carlisle High School, and Northern High School) as well as in Hershey High School and Cedar Cliff High School.

Schaffner Youth Detention Center

The team visits young people in juvenile prison weekly to lead a Bible study and to show them the love of Christ. Trips leave Eisenhower Circle on Thursdays at 5:15pm.
