Silence of Mary Home

Overview
The Silence of Mary Home is a safe haven for young people from the Allison Hill (inner-city) neighborhood of Harrisburg to come live, be discipled,
or just hang out. The director, Sue, is the"mom" of the home. Any person that comes to live in the home, whether short-term or long-term, becomes part of the loving "family." The home is known in its community for its bright murals and as a place of hope where residents can get help for their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. Silence of Mary is a caring family.

Silence of Mary

Volunteer Overview
Silence of Mary is very focused on meeting people’s needs wherever they are, and we try to do the same. Most of the residents, especially the teenagers and young adults, do not have strong support systems, so we spend time just
hanging out, talking with them and letting them know that someone cares about them. Other times, we do odd jobs that Sue, the house “mom,” needs done. Although we do try to “help” in whatever way we can, we learn a lot just
by going and experiencing issues—like poverty, racism, and violence—that residents must deal with every day.

Volunteer Times

Messiah students can serve as friends and mentors to these kids. Currently groups go to Silence of Mary on Saturday afternoons, but we can add other time slots if it would work better to go on another day. Relationships of mutual encouragement are formed as the volunteers and kids praise God, read the Bible, play games, and just talk together.

Young Life and Urban Young Life

“Young people will find a way to meet their needs...even if this means moving in directions that are not approved of by family and/or community.
Whether or how young people meet their needs depends in large part on the strength and direction of influences and opportunities in their lives.”
~ Youth Development Institute

Overview
Young Life (YL) is a non-denominational, Christian organization that is committed to introducing adolescents to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith. YL staff and leaders are caring adults who strive to build positive relationships with teenagers. Through friendships as well as through club, Campaigners and camp, YL leaders get to know teenagers and gain their trust. Because of these relationships, leaders “earn the right to be heard” and can share the Gospel with their teenage friends. YL wants to reach every kid, everywhere, for eternity. Currently, YL is active in all 50 states and more than
45 countries, reaching an estimated 1 million teenagers annually. More than 90,000 kids spend a weekend during the school year or a week during the summer at one of Young Life's 23 camping properties in the United States and Canada.

Volunteer Info
There are about thirty Young Life leaders from Messiah, Dickinson, and HACC. Currently Young Life is active in five area schools (CumberlaYoung LIfend Valley High
School, Cumberland Valley Middle School, Boiling Springs High School, Carlisle High School, and Northern High School) as well as in Hershey High School and Cedar Cliff High School. Urban Young Life helps organize a youth group in Harrisburg. Young Life Volunteers meets for a Bible Study meeting on Messiah College's campus on Wednesday nights from 9:30-11:00pm in Mountain View 141.
