Tutoring and Literacy

The Agape Center partners with three after-school tutoring programs, all located in inner-city Harrisburg. Each program is dedicated to providing a safe-haven for at-risk, inner-city children and provides the opportunity for children to receive one-on-one tutoring. By volunteering just one day a week, Messiah students offer an important contribution to each of these programs.

Tutoring

Community Partners:

  • Allison Hill Tutoring: Help provide a safe place where children can play and engage in educational activities.
Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm

  • Bethesda Youth Center: The Youth Center offers a safe, nuturing environment where kids can be kids and learn how to discover their purpose and fulfill their potential.
    • After School Program: The after school program serves inner city youth, ages 7-18 years old.  A typical week consists of homework help, spiritual development classes, creative learning classes, arts & crafts, worship time, recreation, snacks, lots of fun, and whatever else the needs of the children dictate.
Mondays, Tuesdays from 3:15-6pm and Wednesday from 3:30-6:30pm
    • UCAN Program: This program matches student volunteers with a high school student who attends the Bethesda Youth Center with the goal of encouraging the student to pursue college as a possible option and push them toward goals.

  • Center for Champions: A large program with classroom style tutoring 1st-8th grade.
Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-7pm

  • New Hope Ministries: Connect with children that come from low-income families through Bible study, games, and food. The children are "at risk" of early drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, delinquent behavior, dropping out of school, and sexual promiscuity. New Hope desires to make a difference in their lives now.
Monday and Tuesday evenings from 3:15-5:45pm
    Wednesdays from 2:15-5:45pm
