30-Hour Famine

Purpose of 30-Hour Famine

The 30 Hour Famine is a "World Vision program that allows young people to make a significant impact on the problem of world hunger while growing closer to God and to each other. By pledging to go without food for 30 hours, participants not only raise money to help feed and care for children worldwide, but also gain an understanding of how it feels to experience hunger."

Background of 30-Hour Famine

The 30-hour famine originally started in 1992. Since the program began rates of death among children who die each day from hunger and related diseases has fallen from 40,000 to 26,000. In 2008 alone, more than $12.5 million was raised, providing food to more than 34,000 children (http://www.30hourfamine.org).

30-Hour Famine at Messiah
Those Messiah students participating in the 30-Hour Famine raise money through donors and sponsors to help the millions of starving and hurting children in some of the world's poorest countries, offering them a hope they could not otherwise have. Students then go 30 hours without food, so that they can have a real taste of what hunger is like. During this time they engage in various activities organized by World Christian Fellowship.
