Summer 2007 Service and Mission Trips

Nicaragua
Faculty/Staff Advisor: Faith Minnich and Tim Morgan
Student Coordinator: Charles Brenner

Dates: May 21-June 3

Our Team to Nicaragua will partner with Food for the Hungry (FH) in their work along side ministers at the Nehemiah Center. The Nehemiah Center for Transformational Development is a leadership-training program formed in late 1999. Over the past year alone over 700 church leaders and Christian development agency staff have participated in various seminars and conferences assisted by the Nehemiah Center designed to open people's eyes to the transforming power of the Gospel when it is applied to all areas of life and how much poverty (financial, social, and otherwise) is ultimately found in false beliefs (e.g., machismo, fatalism, etc) which enslave the poor.  The Messiah College team will travel to the Nehemiah Center to assist in its programming as well as connect with other local FH projects including micro-finance projects, continued relief work and construction recovery from Hurricane Mitch, and agriculture and subsistence farming recovery programs.

El Quinche is located just 1.5 hours outside of Ecuador’s capital city of Quito.  This small town nestled in the mountains is site of an important Catholic pilgrimage that takes place each November.  The church ‘El Buen Pastor’ of El Quinche where the team will be serving has become accepted and appreciated in El Quinche.  The church’s main impact has been seen through the Compassion Student Center ‘Nueva Amanecer.’  For almost two years, the student center has been providing the children with educational reinforcement, nutritional meals, spiritual guidance and health care. Through Bridge Builders, they will partner with the people of El Quinche and Compassion International, aiding in the construction of a new facility for children.  The project expansion will allow Student Center ‘Nueva Amanecer’ to open their doors to more children and better serve the students already attending.  Team members look forward to gaining a greater understanding of Ecuadorian culture and history.

This Messiah Team’s specific project will focus on mercy ministry in Shinyanga, Tanzania which is connected with the Africa Inland Church and Africa Inland Mission (AIM). There the team will assist the local church and social service network in providing care for those affected by HIV/AIDS.  Currently there are many widows living in very poor conditions with their children.  Many of these widows and children have HIV/AIDS.  Over 600 in their community alone could use social support. The team will have three main objectives.  1) Build or renovate 4 houses for local families, 2) Offer visitation/support services for clients living with HIV/Aids. 3) Teach the children of the community through local youth groups, schools, and sports ministry. The team is working hard to prepare emotionally as well as spiritually for this unique and difficult environment, aiming to learn from and love the people they will meet.
