Frequently Asked Questions

Who do I talk to about an internship?
Before you speak with anyone, be sure to read the Student Information section completely. After you have read these pages and have a general understanding of what is involved with an internship, contact the Internship Center at x5099. Our professional staff serve as primary contacts for certain academic majors. Please click here - Contacts -  to see with whom you should be in touch.

How do I register for class?
1) Sign up for "9998 - Internship Pending."  This does NOT mean, however, that you are officially registered for an internship.
2) After securing an internship site, you must completely fill out and sign the Registration for Academic Credit form available in the Internship Center or on the student section of their webpage - www.messiah.edu/internship
3) After turning in the completed Registration for Academic Credit form to the Internship Center, you will receive information allowing you to proceed with online registration for either INT394 or INT395.
4) Philadelphia campus students planning Spring internships must conclude this process by January 15.
5) Internship class at Grantham meets Tuesdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

When is the Internship Class held?
The monthly and weekly class are held on Tuesdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m. They are held in the evening because students are at their internship sites during the day. Please check with the Internship Center to confirm the day and time. Note: If you are unable to attend the class on the scheduled day and time, you cannot participate in an academic internship. You may wish to consider registering for a practicum.

Does my employer need to sign anything?
No. They do not need to sign anything during your registration process. After the Internship Center receives and processes your registration for credit, we will send a letter of confirmation, a memo of understanding (which they will need to sign), an employer tip sheet and supervisor's manual to the site supervisor you have listed on the form.

How many credits can I earn in the summer?
You must register for credits under INT394 – Internship and Monthly Seminar. The maximum number of credits available under that category is 10 (40 hours per week of work for 12 weeks). Please check the full listing of hours and credits under the Student Information section of the internship webpages.

How can I get paid for an internship?
Approximately 45% of internships are paid, but we always encourage site sponsors to compensate students where, and when, possible. If you are eligible for financial aid and are working in an organization which serves poor or marginalized populations, you may be eligible to receive a small amount of assistance through Community Work Study funds. Even if you meet the criteria mentioned, you are not guaranteed to receive any money. Funding is minimal.
