Students writing in class

The original vision that called for active participation in service activities in the Latino community of Harrisburg continues today through our collaboration with the Agape Center Student Volunteer Outreach Teams. The purpose of these teams is to recruit and support student volunteers to address service needs in a number of areas. One of these teams focus specifically in addressing the needs of the Latino and migrant community in the Harrisburg-Capital region. For more information on this team, please visit the Latino and Native American Issues page.

Mount Pleasant Hispanic Center
This community center offers tutoring and recreational activities to elementary-aged students. They also offer English classes to Spanish speakers.

Danzante
Danzante is a Latino, arts based, juvenile delinquency prevention and educational community organization which addresses social issues confronting inner-city youth through artistic expression.

Middle School Leadership Development
Annual event on Messiah's campus in association with the Pennsylvania Department of Migrant Education for Dauphin, Adams, and Lebanon Counties. The program exposes middle school migrant children to a college environment, helps decrease anxieties associated with the idea of going to college, as well as encourages them to stay in school and continue their education. The program targets students transitioning from middle school to high school who are from lower SES backgrounds and who may be at risk for dropping out of school.
