Genesis
II History Solar
Splash...
2004 — A New Beginning...
Genesis 2004 was the first solar racing vehicle designed and built by the Messiah Team to enter the water. Genesis 2004 was entered into a new competition, a competition testing us on endurance, speed, and maneuverability. Solar Splash was held on Hoyt Lake in Buffalo, NY. Despite our team being a rookie entry, we placed fourth out of an extremely competitive, internationally attended field of 17 schools such as Kansas State University, the University of South Carolina, and the University of Arkansas. Our fourth place finish came as a surprise to many of these veteran teams at the competition. We also won second place in the endurance portion of the race, and took home the award for best team built hull!
2005— Continuing the tradition ...
Only a year after their first ever solar boat race, the team was ready to race again in the Solar Splash International Solar Boating Championship, held again on Hoyt Lake, in Buffalo New York. The team faced challengers from schools such as University of New Orleans, Cal Poly, the University of Arkansas, and the U.S. Naval Acadamy. After their strong finish the year before, the team was looking forward to winning the competition.
It was not to be, however. During the endurance run, the boats propellor struck a submerged cinder block and fractured, bringing the boat to a stop. While this quickly ended the teams quest for the championship, the boat was recognized in other ways. The craft won both the outstanding drivetrain, for the custom build, super lightweight articulating drive; and the outstanding solar array award for the automatic sun-tracking solar array.
