Takes on Solar Splash!
The race is a combined best score of three events: sprint, slalom, and endurance. Point are also assesed for qualifying, technical reports, visual displays, and workmanship. Additional design awards are given based on judging which takes place throughout the competition. Qualifying - Before we can compete in any of the races of the competition, the boat must be put through its paces in the qualifying run. A short straight line sprint run is performed to ensure the boat is stable under power. Then, an endurance manuverability course (shown below) is run. This ensures that the race is as safe as it can be going into the full scale endurance and sprint events.
Solar Slalom - The fastest time through a course similar to the one below wins the slalom. This requires a boat with a high acceleration, manuverability, and a driver with nerves of steel!.
Sprints - A straight line drag race 300 meters in length. Boats are run three at a time, with the best times advancing in the competition. Speeds get as high as 30 miles/hour in this lightning fast round of competition. Endurance - Boats race around a 1kilometer loop for 2 hours. The boat able to complete the most laps wins. Each team is allowed a 480 watt solar array on their craft for this part of the race. To learn more details
