Economic Development Major

School of Business, Education and Social Sciences
Department of Management & Business

Are you interested in economics? Learning about other cultures? Do you want to help developing communities thrive?

If so, then a degree in economic development might be the perfect path for you. At Messiah College, our combination of classroom theory and hands-on experience prepares you to serve in community and international development at home and abroad through a strong economics and experiential learning curriculum.

In the economic development major, you’ll acquire the knowledge and skills used to serve the least advantaged in rural and urban communities locally and internationally. Core classes in economics, finance, management and international business are complemented with humanities concentrations like politics and anthropology to prepare you to offer strong quantitative skills to development organizations from a Christian perspective.

Equipped with classroom knowledge, you’ll also spend time in the field learning about development, the Christian NGOs doing on-the-ground work, government initiatives and international organizations leading the fight against poverty. Whether completing an internship, studying abroad or working on a service project through Messiah’s Collaboratory, you’ll get the experience you need to serve a variety of economic development organizations

As an economic development major at Messiah College, you’ll be able to:

  • Travel to Mexico for a cross-cultural experience
  • Participate in service projects on campus, in Africa and in Central America through the Collaboratory
  • Study abroad in a developing country
  • Visit transition economies such as Russia, Latvia and Lithuania as well as the developing economies of India and China through the International Business Institute
  • Attend development conferences to connect with practitioners in the field
  • Secure international internships with organizations such as Samaritan's Purse, World Vision, Mennonite Central Committee, Mennonite Economic Development Associates and World Relief
  • Combine studies in economics, international business, finance, politics and anthropology for a well-rounded degree
  • Prepare for graduate work in economic development
