In addition to your education coursework, you will develop a broad knowledge base by studying a wide variety of subjects such as mathematics, history, biology, literature, foreign language, psychology, and the arts. You will also have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of an academic subject of your choice by completing a 12 credit disciplinary focus.student teacher works at her desk
Beginning early in your program, you will have opportunities to observe local public school classrooms. These focused visits help you learn about the roles and responsibilities of teachers and encourage you to evaluate your choice of teaching as a career. As you progress in your program, you will be actively involved in classrooms as you design and implement your own instructional plans, assess your learners, and assist the classroom teacher with administrative tasks.
Your senior year culminates with an entire professional semester that includes a full-time 12-week student teaching experience. College supervisors and experienced classroom teachers work with you to develop your problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a public school classroom. The experience is designed to transition you from student to teacher.

Special education is offered as a dual certification program with the Pre K-4 certification. The dual certification will allow you to complete certification requirements for both Pre K-4 and Special Education. Certification in special education qualifies you to work as a special education teacher at the preschool, elementary, and middle school level. Teachers in schools must be prepared to deal with the tremendous diversity in student learning needs. Our dual certification program will provide you with the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of all your learners. Through the PreK-4 curriculum, you will acquire a foundation for effective thinking, systematic planning, decision making, and differentiating instruction in the classroom. The special education program builds on this foundation by introducing you to in-depth perspectives on learners with special needs, behavioral intervention strategies, approaches to assessment, developmental issues, and appropriate instructional strategies. You will have the opportunity to apply your developing knowledge of special education by participating in several field experiences in local public schools and community organizations in addition to the field experiences that are already built into the elementary education program.
