Edwin "Sandy" Bush

After graduating from Lock Haven State College with a double major in Health and P.E. teaching and athletic training, Sandy completed a master’s of science degree from South Dakota State University. Prior to his 30 years of teaching and athletic training service to Messiah, Sandy served as an Instructor at SDSU, worked in the clinical setting at the University of PA Sports Medicine Center, and served as the Head Athletic Trainer at Haverford College.

Sandy enjoys speaking professionally on a variety of athletic training and sports medicine topics and serves professionally on several committees of the PA Athletic Trainers Society. He continues to have memberships in PATS, the EATA and the NATA. At Messiah, he provides athletic training care and clinical instruction to students assigned to women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, men and women’s swimming and men’s tennis. He enjoys helping students have positive clinical experiences and relationships with their physically active patients and athletes.

He is passionate about mentoring students to grow personally, professionally and spiritually as they complete the athletic training major.

Wendy Cheesman
Wendy Cheesman
Assistant Athletic Trainer; Physical Therapist; Senior Lecturer in Health & Human Performance, LAT, ATC

After graduating from Messiah College,  Wendy worked as an athletic trainer for three years.  She then completed her master's degree in physical therapy.  She returned to Messiah College in 1996 and also has extensive experience in outpatient orthopedics.  Wendy is a certified kinesiology practitioner and is working toward her transitional doctorate in physical therapy.

Jeremy Kauffman
Jeremy Kauffman
Head Athletic Trainer; Lecturer in Health & Human Performance, LAT, ATC

After graduating from Messiah College, Jeremy went on to earn his Master of Science degree in Physical Education from McDaniel College.  Jeremy then went on to become the Head Athletic Trainer at Bryan College before returning to his alma mater. He teaches courses within the Athletic Training major and supervises athletic training students as their preceptor for their clinical experiences.  Jeremy also serves as the Head Athletic Trainer for the college's Athletics Department.  He stays involved with the profession of athletic training through participation in local, state and national organizations. In addition to his love of athletic training, Jeremy is an active member of his church, avid Crossfitter, concert goer, and enjoys cooking to relax.

Matt Lewis
Matt Lewis
Assistant Professor in Athletic Training; Assistant Athletic Trainer, ATC, CSCS

Matt graduated from Asbury University in 2012 with a bachelor of arts degree in athletic training.  He spent time working as an athletic trainer and strength coach in the Boston Red Sox organization and at a high school in Kentucky prior to returning to his alma mater as the Head Athletic Trainer and a member of the exercise science faculty.  During his time at Asbury, Matt completed his Master's degree in athletic training at the University of Kentucky and is currently a doctoral candidate at UK in exercise physiology.  He comes to Messiah with ten years of athletic training experience and seven years of college teaching experience.  Currently, Matt is conducting research in the areas of performance training and functional movement.

Retta Murray
Retta Murray
Assitant Professor in Health & Human Performance; Assistant Athletic Trainer, LAT, ATC

Retta graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Health & Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training.  She continued her studies at Penn State obtaining a Masters in Health Education.   Retta is an Athletic Trainer; certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and licensed in the state of Pennsylvania.  The courses that she teaches include Athletic Injury Assessment for the upper and lower extremities, Practicum I and II in Athletic Training, and Contemporary Health Issues.  In addition to teaching, Retta provides Athletic Training services and supervision of Athletic Training students for Messiah’s volleyball, wrestling and softball teams.   Retta views  Health Education and Athletic Training as opportunities for ministry.  She especially enjoys seeing students gain knowledge and develop skills that they will use as future professionals.
