Jodie L. Haak
Chair, Health & Human Performance Department; Associate Professor of Exercise Science

After graduating from Messiah College, Jodie went on to earn her PhD in Integrative Physiology from the University of Iowa.   The courses she teaches include Anatomy & Physiology, Exercise Physiology Lab and Chronic Disease and Exercise.  Jodie has been an active member of the American Physiological Society for 10 years and has recently become involved with the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine.  Her research interests include aging, exercise, and stress proteins.  Recently she has also collaborated with students on several additional research projects.   She is passionate about science and believes that discovering new things about the world plays a key role in keeping us excited about creation.  It is her goal to instill that same love of learning in her students.

H. Scott Kieffer
H. Scott Kieffer
Assistant Department Chair, Health & Human Performance Department; Professor of Health and Exercise Science, ACSM ETT

Dr. Kieffer combines his passion for teaching and undergraduate research to offer students a wide variety of experiential learning.  He has published and presented many research studies with undergraduate students serving as co-authors and on many occasions as the lead author.  Dr. Kieffer teaches a variety of classes including Introduction to Health and Exercise Science, Research Methods and Statistical Analysis, Kinesiology (Basic Biomechanics, Exercise Testing and Prescription, and Human Anatomy (with cadaver dissection).  During his tenure oat Messiah College, Dr. Kieffer has received the Outstanding Teaching Award at both the junior faculty and at the full professor level.  In addition to his on campus activities, he has been heavily involved with the American College of Sports Medicine.  Dr. Kieffer currently serves as the Executive Director of the Mid-Atlantic Region of ACSM which serves over 1000 professionals in PA, NJ, MD, NY, WV, DE, and DC.

Douglas K. Miller
Douglas K. Miller
Professor of Health & Exercise Science, Director of Wellness, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, National Strength & Conditioning Association

With a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Maryland, Doug teaches Concepts of Conditioning, Exercise Physiology, Elite Athletic Performance, and the Senior Seminar course for HEXS majors.  His current research focus is in the areas of soccer physiology, endurance performance, and worksite wellness.  As a competitive runner from the mile to the marathon, and an intercollegiate track and field and soccer coach, Doug brings years of personal experience to his research and classes.  An active member of American College of Sports Medicine, and certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), he also currently serves as the Wellness Director on campus.  Doug’s favorite place is the classroom, where he seeks to ignite both passion and purpose in students as they take a closer look at the ‘amazing workmanship’ of the human body.

Wendy Cheesman
Wendy Cheesman
Senior Lecturer in Health & Human Performance; Assistant Athletic Trainer, Physical Therapist

After graduating from Messiah College, Wendy worked as an athletic trainer for three years.  She then completed her master's degree in physical therapy.  She returned to Messiah College in 1996 and also has extensive experience in outpatient orthopedics.  Wendy is a certified kinesiology practitioner and is working toward her transitional doctorate in physical therapy.
