Spud Wentzell
Spud Wentzell
Professor of Health & Physical Education

Dr. Wentzell has served K-12 as a teacher, coach and administrator.  He has also been a recreation and camp director, and a therapist in a neuro-psychiatric hospital.  Spud has reviewed and/or developed programs in England, Republic of the Philippines, and Cuba.  He has participated in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention grants focusing on curriculum review and development, and as project coordinator for workshops addressing educational reform.  Spud has been on various committees of the PA State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and has served as the Association's President. He also served on the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Middle and Secondary School Physical Education Council.  He has presented at the state, regional, national and international levels.  He conducts various in-service/staff development sessions for practitioners and serves as a consultant.  Currently he is a Professor of Health and Physical Education in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Messiah College.

Jim Gustafson
Jim Gustafson
Associate Professor of Health & Human Performance

Dr. Jim Gustafson is a graduate of Wheaton College with B.S. degree in physical education.  He taught several years in the public schools prior to coming to Messiah.  His doctorate is from Temple University with a major in recreation and leisure studies.  He is a long time member of the Christian Society for Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (CSKLS) where he has served as a member of the Board of Directors and in 2011 received the Glen Van Andel Distinguished Service Award.  Dr. G.’s most recent presentations at the CSKLS annual conference focus on wellness, healthy relationships and mentoring.  His life goal is to become more like Jesus every day.

Retta K. Murray
Retta K. Murray
Assistant Professor of Health & Human Performance, Assistant Athletic Trainer, LAT, ATC

Retta graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Health & Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training.  She continued her studies at Penn State obtaining a Masters in Health Education.   Retta is an Athletic Trainer; certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and licensed in the state of Pennsylvania.  The courses that she teaches include Athletic Injury Assessment for the upper and lower extremities, Practicum I and II in Athletic Training, and Contemporary Health Issues.  In addition to teaching, Retta provides Athletic Training services and supervision of Athletic Training students for Messiah’s volleyball, wrestling and softball teams.   Retta views  Health Education and Athletic Training as opportunities for ministry.  She especially enjoys seeing students gain knowledge and develop skills that they will use as future professionals.

Judi Tobias
Judi Tobias
Adjunct Instructor in Health & Human Performance, Head Coach of Women's Volleyball

A graduate of Messiah College with a B.A. in Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and Penn State with an M.Ed. in Health Education, Judi has been a member of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association.  She enjoys teaching the various courses on her schedule while also coaching the Women's Volleyball team.  The dual role is challenging but very enjoyable.
