CHE 110, Chemical Science I, (3 credits)
FALL, 2003
Chemical Science I and II together comprise a one-year course introducing inorganic, organic, and biochemistry. They are designed for students whose major requires a total of one year of chemistry. Chemical Science I investigates general inorganic and physical chemistry. Chemical Science II investigates organic and biochemistry.
Objectives of Chemical Science I:
1. To introduce students to the methods, principles, and basic content of chemistry
2. To describe chemical compounds and reactions quantitatively
3. To introduce the properties of the elements in the framework of the periodic chart
4. To see applications of chemical ideas to the health sciences
5. To involve students in applying the methods and principles of chemistry in the lab
Texts:
1. F.A. Bettelheim, W.H. Brown, and J. March, Introduction to General, Organic & Biochemistry (Seventh Edition), Thomson: Brooks/Cole, 2004.
2. Laboratory Manual, Chemical Science I, CHE 110, Messiah College, Fall, 2003.
3. A Pocket Calculator will be needed for tests and the lab.
4. Safety Glasses are required at all times in the laboratory. Chemistry and Biochemistry Department regulations prohibit working in any chemistry laboratory without eye protection.
