Files in the Boyer Center archive

The materials in the Ernest L. Boyer Center Archives have been divided into twelve record groups. Click on the record group name for more information about that segment of the collection.


More information about each of these record groups can be found below.

Manuscripts (M)

Materials in this record group include drafts of the books and articles that Boyer produced throughout his career, as well as some correspondence related to those works. This is the largest record group in the collection.

Speeches (S)

This record group contains drafts of, correspondence relating to, copies of, and final transcripts of speeches that Boyer gave during his professional career. The overwhelming majority of these files are related to Boyer's presidency at the Carnegie Foundation. Materials in this record group are arranged chronologically. This record group comprises approximately 16% of the total collection.

Correspondence (C)

This record group contains correspondence to and from Boyer, as well as correspondence related to his work with the Carnegie Foundation and other institutions. This record group comprises approximately 16% of the total collection.

Media (O, V, Ovr)

Materials in this record group include videotapes, audiotapes, and overhead projection sheets. Most of the overhead projection sheets were used by Boyer in various speeches that he gave throughout his career. The video- and audiotapes depict a variety of events and initiatives: speeches that Boyer gave, NBC-TV's "More Than You Know" public service announcements, Boyer home movies, CBS-TV special "America's Toughest Assignment" with Charles Kuralt interviewing Boyer, etc. This record group constitutes approxmiately 8% of the total collection.

Foundation Publications (FP)

This record group contains materials related to the various reports issued by and educational projects undertaked by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching during Boyer's tenure as its president. Materials in this record group constitute approximately 4% of the total collection.

Foundation Sponsored Programs (FSP)

Materials in this record group relate to various programs sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching during Boyer's tenure as its president.

Honors (H)

This record group contains the honorary degrees, plaques, and awards conferred upon Boyer.

Photos (P)

Personnel Files (PF)

This record group contains papers, vitae, and memoranda related to personnel working for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Leadership (Q)

This record group contains notes and drafts of chapters from a book on leadership that Boyer was working on prior to his death.

Survey Responses (S)

Materials in this record group are related to a study of Native American tribal colleges conducted by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Pre-Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (CFAT) files and memorabilia (R)

Materials in this record group include scrapbooks, yearbooks, honorary degree hoods, and files from Boyer's career and life prior to his work for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This record group comprises approximately 28% of the total collection.
