College-Wide Assessment Data

  1. Standardized Instruments
    1. SAT/ACT Scores. Recorded annually for all incoming students; provides a baseline picture which may be compared with national norms for first-year students.
    2. Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP). Administered biannually to all incoming students; provides a baseline picture which may be compared with national norms for first-year students and information gathered during the senior year through other assessment activities.
    3. Your First College Year (YFCY). Administered every four years to first year students during the spring semester; designed to assess the academic and personal development of students over the first year of college.
    4. AICUP First Year Student Survey. Conducted through the Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Pennsylvania; administered every four years in the spring semester to the first year class; evaluates student reflections on educational and curricular programs during the first year.
    5. Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI). Administered every four years to a subset of each class; designed to solicit and measure student perceptions of importance and satisfaction within various areas of the campus environment.
    6. College Student Survey (CSS). Administered biannually during the spring semester to graduating seniors; provides feedback on students’ self-reported academic and campus life experiences; selected items are correlated with data from the CIRP.
    7. College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ). Administered every four years during the spring semester to graduating seniors; assesses the quality of effort students expend in using the resources and opportunities provided by the institution for their learning and development.
    8. National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Administered every four years to first year students and seniors during the spring semester; studies the quality of the undergraduate learning on campus by way of student engagement/experiences.
    9. Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Annual GRE Summary Statistics Reports provide data on scores for all graduating seniors who completed the exam [relatively small number of departments].
    10. Alumni Survey. Administered periodically to graduates several years after commencement; originally sponsored by the CCCU, with additional items on the instrument supplied by Messiah; portions of the instrument correspond to selected items from the CIRP, CSS and CSEQ. The Alumni Office occasionally also conducts alumni surveys.
    11. Admitted Student Questionnaire. Administered annually to a random sample of accepted students to access the reasons for and influences upon students’ decisions whether or not to enroll at Messiah College.

  2. Interviews
    1. Senior Interviews. Administered to 15 to 25 members of the graduating class; interviews are comprised of guided questions emphasizing the development of character and faith.
    2. Alumni Interviews. Administered on occasion, often in conjunction with the Alumni Survey, to a random sample of graduates; guided questions emphasizing the development of character and faith; correlated with the senior interviews.
