Inquiring Students

What is an Internship?

  • Semester-long, supervised work experience related to your major or career goal
  • Open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors in the fall, spring, or summer
  • Part-time or full-time
  • Paid or unpaid
  • Primarily in an off-campus environment
  • Academic elements distinguish it from a short-term job or volunteer work:
    • intentional self-directed learning strategy
    • reflection - both verbal and written
    • emphasis on professional development
  • NOTE:  Students are strongly encouraged to participate in an internship for academic credit.  There are multiple advantages for doing so, including coverage under the college's liability policy and a means to incorporate accountability between you, the employer, and the college.

To participate in an internship, you must be:

  • eager and willing to learn in an experience which combines work and an academic component
  • enrolled full-time in a degree program at Messiah College
  • a Sophomore, Junior or Senior for INTE391 / a Junior or Senior for INTE394
  • academically proficient with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above
  • supported by your academic department
  • a trustworthy representative of Messiah College to the community
