Due to the significant, steady rain that is forecast to hit our region Friday evening through Saturday, Messiah College has enacted an adjusted schedule for the 2017 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony.

The College will now hold two abbreviated indoor ceremonies (11 a.m. and 2 p.m.) both in the Brubaker Auditorium of the Eisenhower Campus Center. Graduates are assigned a ceremony time based on which academic school they are graduating from (see below). Seating is very limited inside the auditorium, and guests will be required to have tickets for entry.

Indoor Commencement Ceremony Schedule Adjustments

Graduates:

  • The continental breakfast for graduates will proceed as scheduled from 7:00-8:30 a.m. in Lottie Nelson Dining Room.
  • Caps/gowns, and rain plan tickets will be available for pickup by graduates at the Dispatch Office, located in the lobby of Eisenhower Campus Center, from 7:30-9:30 a.m.
  • This is the last remaining time for graduates to pick up “rain plan” tickets for their guests if they haven’t done so already. Tickets will only be released to graduates, who will need to make arrangements to get them to their guests.
  • Graduates should report with their cap and gown to Sawyer Products Gymnasium (Sollenberger Sports Center) 90 minutes before the start time of their respective ceremony .Due to construction, you must enter Sollenberger Sports Center via the main entrance or through Eisenhower Campus Center. Graduates will be lined up and given marching instructions when they arrive.
    • Graduates marching in the 11 a.m. ceremony should report no later than 9:30 a.m.
    • Graduates marching in the 2 p.m. ceremony should report no later than 12:30 p.m.
  • Following the conclusion of the ceremony, graduates will not be able to return to Sawyer Gymnasium. To avoid congestion in the building, graduates will exit directly from the second floor of Eisenhower Campus Center and be led to Larsen Student Union. All guests will exit directly outdoors from the first floor of Eisenhower Campus Center. Please meet your family and guests at a previously determined location, i.e., at your residence hall or at the Larsen Student Union, which will be open starting at 7:30 a.m. (offering food service from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.). 

Guests:

Shuttle service/schedule:

  • Prior to the ceremonies: Shuttle service will be provided to transport guests beginning at 7:30 a.m.
    • For guests holding tickets to the Brubaker Auditorium ceremony, the shuttle drop-off location will be at the Sollenberger Sports Center entrance.
    • For guests who will be attending the live webcast in the High Center (no tickets required) the shuttle drop off will be in front of the High Center.
  • Following the ceremonies: Guests will be returned to their vehicles via the return shuttle/pick-up locations in front of Eisenhower Campus Center or at the main entrance to the High Center. The return shuttles will run for 90 minutes following the conclusion of the second ceremony (through approximately 5 p.m.)

Admittance to Brubaker Auditorium:

  • Guests holding indoor ceremony tickets—whether for the 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. ceremony—must first report to Hitchcock Arena in the Sollenberger Sports Center
    • Only guests holding tickets for the 11 a.m. ceremony will be admitted to Hitchcock Arena prior to 11 a.m. You must show your indoor ceremony tickets for admittance to Hitchcock
    • Guests holding tickets for the 2 p.m. ceremony will not be admitted to Hitchcock Arena prior to 11:30 a.m. You must show your indoor ceremony tickets for admittance to Hitchcock
  • From Hitchcock, all guests will be escorted to their appropriate seating area once the auditorium is open for seating (60-90 minutes prior to each ceremony). You will receive a number when you show your ticket, and will be taken to your seating area in the order you arrived. (Guests who wish to sit together at the ceremony should plan to enter Hitchcock Arena at the same time.) No admittance will be made to the ceremony from any other area. 
  • Inside Hitchcock Arena, guests will be able to mingle and enjoy refreshments until it is time to be escorted to your respective indoor ceremony. (Doors will open to Brubaker Auditorium 60-90 minutes prior to each ceremony’s start time.)
  • Refreshments, the flower vendor table, as well as an information table for guests, will also be available inside Hitchcock. Guests are also invited to visit the Campus Store during this time (open 9 a.m.-4 p.m.).

Exiting the indoor ceremony:

  • Following the conclusion of the 11 a.m. ceremony, guests from all venues will be exited directly outside from the building. (Guests will not return to Hitchcock Arena due to congestion of guests who are arriving for the second ceremony.) You are encouraged to meet your graduate outside or in an area you have pre-arranged, i.e., their student residence or Larsen Student Union.
  • We ask that you exit the area surrounding Eisenhower Campus Center and Sollenberger Sports Center as soon as possible so that we may help reduce congestion for graduates and guests arriving for the 2 p.m. ceremony.

Location for meeting and dining:

  • Larsen Student Union will be open starting at 7:30 a.m. as a venue for guests and graduates to meet and congregate throughout the day. From 11:00-4:00 p.m. the Union Café will provide pizza and other “grab and go” light lunch, beverage, and snack items available for purchase in that location.

Other guest services:

  • The Campus Store, located on the ground floor of Eisenhower Campus Center, will be open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Platform Party:

  • The Platform Party will march in the processionals and will participate in BOTH ceremonies, and should attend a briefing at 9:30 a.m. in Sollenberger Sports Center, Room 125 (wrestling/multipurpose room).
  • Please enter the building by the Eisenhower Campus Center lobby main entrance doors (the ones closest to the Ticket Office). You will then be directed to Sollenberger Sports Center, Room 125 (wrestling/multipurpose room).
  • Members of the Platform Party will have lunch provided for them in between ceremonies (12:30-1:15 p.m. in the Private Dining Room on the upper level of Eisenhower Campus Center).

Community of Educators:

  • The Community of Educators will march only in the processional for the ceremony of their respective School, and should report with their regalia to the new Sawyer Gymnasium in Sollenberger Sports Center, one hour before the start time of their respective ceremony. Those members of the COE who do not have an affiliation with a particular School should look on their parking pass to see which ceremony they are assigned to (11:00 = a.m.; 2:00 = p.m.)
  • Please enter the building by the Eisenhower Campus Center lobby main entrance doors (the ones closest to the Ticket Office). You will then be directed to Sawyer Gymnasium.
  • The COE will participate in the processional at the start of their respective ceremonies, and will then be dismissed. Due to space limitations inside Brubaker Auditorium, there is no seating available for members of the Community of Educators during either Commencement ceremony.

Educator Marshals:

  • Educator Marshals should report to new Sawyer Gymnasium in the Sollenberger Sports Center one hour before the start time of their respective ceremony .
  • Please enter the building by the Eisenhower Campus Center lobby main entrance doors (the ones closest to the Ticket Office). You will then be directed to Sawyer Gymnasium.
  • Educator Marshals will have lunch provided for them in between ceremonies at 12:30 in the Private Dining Room, located on the upper floor of Eisenhower Campus Center.

Student Marshals:

  • Student Marshals should report to Sollenberger Sports Center, Room 125 (wrestling/multipurpose room) 1 hour and 15 minutes before their assigned ceremony's start time .
  • Please enter the building by the Eisenhower Campus Center lobby main entrance doors (the ones closest to the Ticket Office). You will then be directed to Sollenberger Sports Center room 125.
  • Student Marshals will have lunch provided for them in between ceremonies at 12:30 in the Private Dining Room, located on the second floor of Eisenhower Campus Center.

Banner Carriers:

  • Banner carriers should report to the Sollenberger Sports Center, Room 125 (wrestling/multipurpose room) 1 hour and 15 minutes before the start time of their respective ceremony .
  • During the time of the ceremony opposite of the one you will be marching in, you are to go to the High Center for Worship and Performing Arts to help usher guests who are watching the live stream of the ceremony (i.e., banner carriers for the 11 a.m. ceremony will usher the 2 p.m. ceremony and banner carriers for the 2 p.m. ceremony will usher the 11 a.m. ceremony). Please follow the reporting time/schedule that you were given at Friday’s rehearsal.
  • Please enter the building by the Eisenhower Campus Center lobby main entrance doors (the ones closest to the Ticket Office). You will then be directed to Sollenberger Sports Center, Room 125 (wrestling/multipurpose room).

Department Chairs Marching with Graduates:

  • Department Chairs marching with the graduates will march only in the processional for the ceremony of their respective School, and should report with their regalia to the new Sawyer Gymnasium in the Sollenberger Sports Center 1 hour and 15 minutes before their assigned ceremony’s start time.
  • 11 a.m. ceremony (report at 9:45 a.m.)
    • School of Business, Education and Social Sciences
    • School of the Arts
  • 2 p.m. ceremony (report at 12:45 p.m.)
    • School of Science, Engineering and Health
    • School of the Humanities
  • Please enter the building by the Eisenhower Campus Center lobby main entrance doors (the entrance closest to the Ticket Office). You will then be directed to Sawyer Gymnasium.

Concert Choir and President’s Brass:

  • Faculty and students who are a part of the Concert Choir and President’s Brass will NOT be performing as part of the indoor ceremonies. If you have no other assigned role in the Commencement ceremony please do not report.
