Chemistry Major, B.A., with Secondary Teaching Certification

Often called the "central science," chemistry relies heavily on theory from mathematics and physics, and then informs such diverse fields as ecology, agriculture, medicine, molecular biology, genetics, geology, and food science. As a chemistry major at Messiah College, you will take courses in general, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry as well as chemical analysis, with supporting courses in mathematics and physics. Students desiring certification by the state of Pennsylvania to teach secondary level chemistry follow the program of study for the B.A. chemistry major with additional education courses. It includes a professional semester, part of which is a 12-week student teaching experience. The department has a variety of research opportunities available beginning in the second year, and Chemistry Education majors are welcome and encouraged to participate.
