Dr. Kathleen Dougherty earned her undergraduate degree from Penn State University and received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. She completed her Psychiatry Residency at the University Hospitals of Case Western Reserve University.

Following her psychiatry residency, she completed a forensic psychiatry fellowship at the University Hospitals of Case Western and was mentored by Dr. Philip Resnick, an internationally known forensic psychiatrist. Following her forensic fellowship, Dr. Dougherty practiced forensic psychiatry in the Cleveland area for seven years. This included psychiatric consultation for the County Jail, County Juvenile Court, City Jail, and Court Psychiatric Clinic.

Dr. Dougherty returned to Pennsylvania and joined the Penn State College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry faculty. Clinically, she was the co-director of the adult inpatient psychiatry unit and the co-director of the eating disorders program. Additionally, she was the director of the Forensic Psychiatry Clinic. For ten years, Dr. Dougherty was an adjunct law professor at Dickinson School of Law where she taught Psychiatry and the Law.

Since 2006, Dr. Dougherty has been with Lancaster General Hospital Department of Psychiatry. She is currently the Chair of Psychiatry. It should be noted that Dr. Dougherty is one of few psychiatrists who is triple boarded as an Adult, Forensic, and Geriatric psychiatrist. Her clinical practice spans these three populations.

Dr. Dougherty continues to commit one day per week to the Psychiatry Department of Penn State College of Medicine where she coordinates psychiatry resident education. She has been active in the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society and currently serves as President of the Society. The past nine years she has been cited in the prestigious Best Doctors in America Guide. At Penn State College of Medicine, she was honored with the Dean’s Award for Excellence in teaching. Lastly, Dr. Dougherty was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
