Dr. Roger Johnson has been teaching at Messiah College since 1984. Prior to teaching at Messiah, he taught for four years at Emporia State University in Emporia, KS where he was chair of the Department of Economics, and then he taught for three years at Trinity College in Deerfield, IL.
He received his B.A. in Economics from North Park College in 1969 and then for two years worked for Western Electric in their Industrial Engineering Department at the Hawthorn Plant in Cicero, IL. Professor Johnson returned to graduate school at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL where he completed his Ph.D. in Economics in 1980. His fields of specialization were international trade and economic development. Since that time he has begun to focus his research and study on the area of political economy and the underlying value systems that are brought into economic analysis. As reflection of his continuing studies in this area, he currently teaches an upper-division ethics course entitled, "Christian Perspectives on Justice and Rights."
In 1990 Dr. Johnson had an article concerning Adam Smith's underlying vision of the social and selfish values which shape the political and economic process published in the Review of Social Economics. He received the Helen Potter Award from the Association for Social Economics for the outstanding article appearing in the journal that year. Faith integration issues continue to be at the heart of his teaching and research. He maintains memberships in the American Economic Association, The Association for Social Economics and the Association for Christian Economists.
He has been married to Jeanie for 33 years and has three children, two daughters and a son. Both of his daughters graduated from Messiah College.
