At Messiah the new thrust for inclusive excellence has already found expression in strategic planning initiatives and institutional capacity building efforts. The launching of a college-wide Diversity Strategic Planning Initiative led to the completion of a Campus Climate Survey (2007-2008) and to the creation of a special task force whose aim was to design a diversity plan for the college. Led by Dr. Lawrence A. Q. Burnley, the then Associate Dean for Multicultural Programs and Special Assistant to the Provost for Diversity Affairs, the Diversity Plan Task Force successfully completed the design of the college’s first Diversity Strategic Plan. This Plan was approved by College Governance in Spring 2011. The creation of both the office of the Special Assistant to the President and Provost for Diversity Affairs as well as the Diversity Committee in 2010 and 2011 is generating institutional traction that will operationalize the Diversity Plan. Embracing and incarnating such a vision for inclusive excellence at Messiah College is central to our task of preparing men and women to live lives of service, leadership, and reconciliation within the emerging twenty-first century context of a diverse church and society.
