David Foster research bioProfessor of Biology & Environmental Science

Aquaponics and Plant Biostimulants - I work with the research and product development team of Intag using patented, worm-based bioprocessors to develop biostimulant solutions giving better crop yields.  We have applied these systems to a wide variety of crop plants, native medicinal plants, and even trees in aquaponics, hydroponic, and terrestrial systems.

Science, Language, and Relationships - Co-exploration and reinvigoration of ethnobotany traditions with Forest County Potawatomi, WI.  I and my research students are working on plant medicinal compounds here at Messiah University (antimicrobials).  We are also working with the Forest County Potawatomi as they reinvigorate their ethnobotanical traditions and lanugage.  And, with their great patience, I am working to learn Potawatomi, a language in which the majority of nouns are animate.

Forest Ecology - Fire effects on deciduous forests, forest restoration, and control of invasive plant species, PA.  This work centers on understanding long-term effects of low-intensity fires in oak forests as well as the ecological role of past charcoal hearths in structure and succession of our regional forests in Central Pennsylvania.  My research students and courses also work with local land owners in developing and implementing forest management/restoration plans centered on control of invasive species, development of timber production and wildlife habitat.
