Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service through which materials Murray Library doesn’t own may be borrowed from other libraries. Patrons are, of course, strongly urged to use our own Library resources as much as possible although the Library staff will do everything possible to locate research materials in other libraries, if needed. A Reference Librarian is glad to help you search for materials in our Library.

Before you proceed, check the LIBRARY CATALOG or our Periodicals List to see if we already own the item you need.

Placing an Interlibrary Loan Request for BOOKS
  • EZ-Borrow (fast!  Use for book requests only)
E-ZBorrow is a way to quickly find and borrow books from many academic libraries in Pennsylvania. Because E-ZBorrow requests go directly to the lending libraries, they are generally faster than using traditional Interlibrary Loan. NOTE: If you have overdue items at Murray Library, the system will not let you place E-ZBorrow requests.
  • ILLiad (coming soon!!)
Many patrons are already familiar with WorldCat and have used it to place Interlibrary Loan requests. ILLiad is a system linked toWorldCat that enhances processing and tracking of Interlibrary Loan requests. Through it, patrons are able to check the status of their own requests. NOTE: First-time ILLiad users must register before submitting a request.
  • BOOK REQUEST FORM (for those rare occasions when you have not found an item in E-ZBorrow or WorldCat/ILLiad).

Placing an Interlibrary Loan Request for ARTICLES

Whenever possible, use the direct links for ordering articles available in the Online Databases.

Placing a Request for other types of materials

In addition to books and articles, we can place requests for:

Items we don't borrow:

    • Items Messiah owns
    • Student's textbooks
Request FORMS (use if you have not found the items in E-ZBorrow or WorldCat):

Who May Use This Service?

  • All Messiah faculty, administrators, staff, current students, faculty spouses, and Friends of Murray Library (at the Contributor level or higher).
  • Services to faculty spouses are limited to scholarly materials.
  • Students are restricted to ten ILL requests per course per semester. Exceptions should be approved by the course’s liaison librarian.
  • Community patrons not associated with Messiah College and alumni are not eligible to use this service unless they belong to the Friends of Murray Library (at the Contributor level or higher). Friends members are restricted to ten ILL requests per academic year.

How Long Does It Take?

Please allow two (2) weeks to receive your requested materials. This is an average and many items will arrive more quickly than this, particularly books ordered through E-ZBorrow. However, in certain cases, items may take longer, particularly those that are only held by a few libraries or those that need to be shipped from a farther distance or from out of the country.

Fees
Patrons are usually not charged for ILL services. However, patrons should be aware that the average cost of an Interlibrary Loan request is $20.00, which includes shipping charges, administrative costs, staffing, and copyright clearances. Therefore, prudent use of ILL is always encouraged. (Note to faculty: Please do not require students to place ILL requests simply to get the experience).
  • Students: If the cost for borrowing an item is over $20.00, you will be asked to pay the difference in advance. (This usually happens in a case where the lending library charges more than $20.00.)
  • Faculty: If the cost for borrowing an item is over $25.00, you may be asked to pay the difference.
  • NOTE: The borrowing patron will be charged for material that is damaged, lost, or overdue.

Delivery of materials

Copies for students, staff and faculty are sent via e-mail as attachments (PDF files) whenever possible. Otherwise, photocopies are sent via campus mail.

Books and other materials that must be returned to the lending library are held at the Library and a notice is sent to patrons via e-mail that the items can be picked up at the circulation desk.

Return of loaned items
All loaned items with assigned due dates should be returned at the circulation desk in Murray Library. The borrower is ultimately responsible for the loaned material. Any bills received for damaged or lost items will be charged to the patron's account.
