Review of:
Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy by Matthew Scully.

Easily the best account I’ve read on the subject of animal welfare--well-reasoned and researched, yet soulful. Scully doesn’t insist on equal rights for animals, but he does insist that they should be treated with respect and dignity, and raises the question of whether we can foster human dignity in a society that mistreats other sentient beings. He recounts his personal investigation of major animal industries (factory farming, exotic game hunting, experimentation laboratories to test nonessential consumer products), and presents a broad range of views on the uses and treatment of animals, and whether they possess consciousness and the ability to feel pain. Often a difficult book to read, but a needed "call to mercy."
