Review of:
Team of rivals : the political genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin

This is a well researched and well written book by respected historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, covering the lives of Abraham Lincoln and key members of his Presidential Cabinet.  In 1860, Lincoln defeated better known candidates such as William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Simon Cameron to win the Republican nomination.  As President, he appointed these men as Cabinet members, using their strengths to assist him in leading the country during the Civil War.  Some of these men later became great friends and admirers of Lincoln; others disliked the President and sought to sabotage his chances at reelection, yet Lincoln managed to handle the conflicts and personalities with the necessary wisdom and skill.
