A Zimbabwean, is a novel that is set in colonial Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the 1960s. Published in 1989, this is the first novel written by a black Zimbabwean to be published in English and, it is still in print!. Tambu, a young teenage girl leaves her home in the countryside, to attend a missionary school run by her wealthier British-educated uncle. Tambu’s encounters with colonialism, living with a privileged family, and her visits back home create a clash of traditions and values that provide for interesting reading.
