Life is beautiful / Roberto Benigni (dir.) |
This hilarious and deeply moving film by Roberto Benigni, who also plays the lead, is a must see. And, in my view, it must be viewed in the original Italian with subtitles. The voice-over English version just doesn't cut it. Set in WWII Italy, we follow the crazy exploits of Guido (Benigni) as he pursues, and wins, the affections of the lovely Dora. The movie takes a dramatic turn when Guido is taken to a Nazi camp and struggles to hold his family together. He uses stunning creativity, humor, and love, despite the gruesome circumstances, to help his young son survive. |
