Suzanne C. Miller Messiah College to examine parenting in Taiwan through lecture GRANTHAM, Pa. (September 22, 2004) Shann-Hwa (Abraham) Hwang, Ph.D., assistant professor of human development and family science at Messiah College, will present a lecture titled “The Effects of Unequal Financial Resources on Adolescents’ Perceptions of Parental Behaviors,” on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 4:15 p.m. in room 131 of Boyer Hall, located on Messiah’s Grantham campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Department of Human Development and Family Science at (717) 796-1800, extension 7050. The lecture is based on Hwang’s research with 291 youth using the Parent-Child Relationship Survey. Hwang’s discussion will include results of his research of what good and bad parents do in a distinct ethnic context, specifically in Taiwan . He will also discuss religious practices in Taiwan and possible influences they have on various financial situations. The lecture is sponsored by Messiah’s Department of Human Development and Family Science in celebration of the 10 th anniversary of the International Year of the Family as determined by the United Nations. About the International Year of the Family In 1989, by resolution 44/82, the U.N. General Assembly proclaimed 1994 the International Year of the Family to increase awareness of family issues and improve the capability of nations to tackle family-related problems with comprehensive policies. The observance of the 10 th anniversary during 2004 will culminate in the holding of one plenary session of the U.N. General Assembly on the topic of families. It will be devoted to a reaffirmation of commitments made and the identification of further actions.
