Suzanne C. Miller Local high school and middle school students to perform in concert with Messiah College Symphonic Winds GRANTHAM, Pa. (September 27, 2004) The Messiah College Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds will perform a concert during homecoming weekend on Sunday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m. in Miller Auditorium, Climenhaga Fine Arts Center, located on the college’s Grantham campus. For the first time, six guest trumpet students from local high schools and one middle school will be performing with the Symphonic Winds. Brandon Cedel from Hershey High School, Colin Delong from Central Dauphin High School, Brian Helfrich from Susquehannock High School, Ryan Sweer from Mechanicsburg Area High School, Justin Wantz from Cumberland Valley High School, and Evan Williams from Good Hope Middle School will join six Messiah College trumpet players during the Symphonic Winds’ performance of “Konigsmarsch” by Richard Strauss. Helfrich and Delong will also join associate professor of music and music department chairman William Stowman for a trumpet fanfare during the Wind Ensemble’s performance of “Celebration” by Philip Sparke. “Having six superior high school trumpet students performing with us gives them a great look at Messiah College ensembles and our complete music program,” said Bradley Genevro, director of the Messiah College bands. “We will be doing events like this on a regular basis during our concerts in an effort to promote our quality music program here at Messiah.” The program will also include “Brigg Fair” by Percy Grainger, “Amazing Grace” by William Himes and “Strength and Weakness” by Jack Stamp. The “Strength and Weakness” selection will feature the Symphonic Winds, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Choirs. Under the direction of Genevro, assistant professor of music, the Messiah College Wind Ensemble is a 46-member ensemble and the Symphonic Winds is a 65-member ensemble composed of wind players and percussionists from Messiah College ’s student body. The ensembles are committed to performing and preserving music written for wind instruments based on sacred and secular themes. The Messiah College bands have gained national recognition for their 1998 recording “Cross Winds” and their 2002 recording “Affirmations,” which were both released by MarkCustom records. Messiah College , a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls more than 2,900 undergraduate students in 60 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham , Pa. , near the state capital of Harrisburg .
