Suzanne C. Miller Messiah College nurse awarded "Best Nurse Leader" in tri-state region
GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 25, 2004) — Messiah College’s coordinator of health services, Judy Groop, BSN, RN, BC, has won the ADVANCE for Nurses newsmagazine’s 2004 Best Nurse Leader contest for the Philadelphia tri-state region. “We have heard time and again, that a nursing unit is a great place to work when it has a supportive, respected nurse leader,” said Linda Jones, editorial director of ADVANCE for Nurses. “We wanted to recognize these leaders and acknowledge all they do for staff and for their facility.” Groop, of Dillsburg, oversees four staff nurses at Messiah College’s Engle Health Center. College staff nurse Lisa Baker, of Hummelstown, wrote an essay about Groop’s leadership skills, which served as the nomination entry for ADVANCE for Nurses’ award. “Lisa shared her essay with me this summer,” Groop said. “I was honored by what she wrote and felt that recognition from my own staff was a great honor all by itself. Little did I know that I would win the title of Best Nurse Leader 2004 for the greater Philly tri-state area.” Baker was one of many nurses from across the Philadelphia tri-state region to nominate their nurse managers, directors of nursing, nursing supervisors, charge nurses and others for this award. A panel of three judges evaluated the entries by awarding scores on: how the manager made a difference in patient outcomes, interpersonal relationships, professional development, effectiveness and efficiency of the unit, making a difference in the overall work environment and any other qualities. “When I saw the contest for ‘Best Nurse Leader’ advertised, I felt I had to nominate Judy,” Baker said. “She truly makes a difference in the lives of her staff and the students at Messiah, so I thought she had a good chance of winning the contest. Happily the judges agreed.” The Oct. 25 issue of ADVANCE for Nurses features Groop on the cover as well as an inside article, including Baker’s essay. Groop was presented with an engraved plaque commemorating her first place showing in the contest and she will be treated to a special celebration, courtesy of ADVANCE. Groop will also serve as an honorary editorial advisory board member of ADVANCE for Nurses for one year and her first place win will be publicized in the nine other regional editions of ADVANCE for Nurses.
