Ned Heindel to present lecture at Messiah College

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 28, 2004) — Ned Heindel, professor of chemistry at Lehigh University, will present a free public lecture at Messiah College on Thursday, Nov. 18, in Room 120 of Kline Hall, located on the college’s Grantham campus. The lecture is titled “Folk Medicine in the 19 th Century” and is sponsored by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Section of the American Chemical Society (SEPSACS). The evening will begin with a tour of the Oakes Museum of natural history at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner in the Hollinger Atrium of the Jordan Science Center at 6 p.m. The cost for the dinner is $20, and registration is required by Nov. 11. A York native, Heindel holds a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware as well as a post doctorate in medicinal chemistry from Princeton University. He taught at Marshall University and Ohio University before joining the Lehigh faculty in 1966. He and his students have conducted research on antimalarials, cancer chemotherapeutics, radiation sensitizers and anti-fungals. He has published more than 200 papers in medicinal chemistry and holds eight patents, three of which have been out-licensed to the pharmaceutical industry for development. Heindel is currently the director of the medicinal chemistry laboratory for Serenix Pharmaceuticals, a young corporate start-up firm located in Bethlehem, Pa., doing product development in Central Nervous System agents.

Messiah College , a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls more than 2,900 undergraduate students in 50 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg. A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia.
