GRANTHAM, Pa. (April 8, 2005) — The Messiah College department of music will present its spring jazz concert of “big band” music and vocal jazz on April 22 at 8 p.m. in Miller Auditorium, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus. The program will feature the Jazz Singers as well as the college’s two “big bands,” JazzONE and JazzTWO, who will perform a mix of jazz standards as well as sacred jazz arrangements. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call (717) 766-2511, ext. 3310.

Comprised of 13 vocalists along and accompaniment, including a piano, bass and drums, the Jazz Singers will perform “Lullaby of Birdland,” “Here’s That Rainy Day,” “There Will Never Be Another You,” “Misty,” “Desafinado,” “How Insensitive,” “No More Blues,” “I’ll Be Seeing You” and “Sing You Sinners.” Jazz Singers is under the direction of Elaine Henderson, the director of vocal studies at the college. Henderson, a soprano, has performed extensively in the Harrisburg area in recitals, as a soloist with local choral organizations in lead roles with the Harrisburg Opera Association. She has also served as a performer and vocal coach with Theatre Harrisburg.

Under the direction of William Stowman, Messiah’s chair of the music department and director of bands, JazzONE is a 20-member "big band" that performs and studies jazz standards as well as contemporary arrangements for jazz ensemble. Stowman also serves as the music director and conductor of the Greater Harrisburg Concert Band.

JazzTWO is a 20- to 25-member “big band” that performs and studies jazz standards as well as other styles and is under the direction of Rob Starrett, an adjunct instructor of music at the college and director of bands at Red Land High School in the West Shore School District.

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls more than 2,900 undergraduate students in 60 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg . A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia .
