Messiah College Cultural Series announces 2005-2006 season lineup

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 1, 2005) — Messiah College announces its 2005-2006 season lineup for the Messiah College Cultural Series – an annual public concert and performance series sponsored by the college.

The Abaca String Band – Sept. 23, 2005

Founded in 1991, the Abaca String Band features an eight-string guitar, mandolin, violin, viola and double bass. The group’s rich repertoire ranges from Bach to the Beatles. The Abaca String Band began performing for membership events at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and has also played for the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series. Other appearances include the White House, the Lincoln Center, the Newport Music Festival, the Library of Congress and Troy Music Hall.

The Wihan Quartet – Nov. 4, 2005

The Wihan Quartet is one of the most elite string quartets of its generation. While it officially formed in 1985, its members first came together as young music students at Prague Academy. Today, the Wihan Quartet has an international reputation for playing its native Czech repertoire as well as many other classical, romantic and modern masterpieces. The group has performed in Barcelona, Hamburg, London, Paris, Florence, Tokyo and many other musical capitals of the world. The Quartet’s Nov. 4 performance will be held at Messiah College in Hostetter Chapel and all seating will be general admission.

“Winter Holiday Jazz” with David Leonhardt – Dec. 2, 2005

Internationally acclaimed pianist and composer, David Leonhardt, will kick off the holiday season with a collection of carols and arrangements. Leonhardt will be accompanied by his all-star jazz group to render your holiday favorites. A highly skilled and versatile musician, Leonhardt has 25 years of professional experience, and recently recorded the #1 jazz CD, “Under a Woodstock Moon.” Leonhardt toured as pianist with jazz legend Jon Hendricks, performed with stars such as Stan Getz, Slide Hampton, Eddie Henderson and Ray Drummond, and is now the musical director for the Muhlenberg Jazz Tap Ensemble.

Czech Nonet – Feb. 17, 2006

One of the oldest chamber ensembles in the world, Czech Nonet has a unique combination of instruments including violin, viola, violoncello, contrabass and a wind quintet. Founded in 1924, Czech Nonet quickly became Europe’s most prestigious ensemble. The internationally acclaimed group offers rich and colorful combinations and a sound that resembles a chamber orchestra.

Ensemble Amarcord – March 3, 2006

Founded in 1992 by five former choristers of the famous St. Thomas Boys’ Choir, the Ensemble Amarcord continues to impress audiences worldwide. While this male a cappella quintet focuses on music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, it also adds collaborations with contemporary composers. The group has won several international competitions and is one of Leipzig’s main musical representatives in both Germany and abroad.

All Messiah College Cultural Series performances begin at 8 p.m. in Miller Auditorium, located in Messiah College’s Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus, unless otherwise noted. Season subscriptions for all five Cultural Series events are available for $85. Tickets for individual performances cost $20 each.
