GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 1, 2005) — The Messiah College Department of Music will host Indian musician Sandip Burman on Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. in Room 134 of the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center, located on the college’s Grantham campus. Burman will play the tabla and tabla torung – rhythmic instruments commonly used in Indian music – and will be accompanied by other instruments in a style described as “jazz fusion.” The performance will allow for audience participation and will be interspersed with discussions about Indian music and how it compares to western music. The performance is free and open to the public. For more information, please call the music department at (717) 766-2511, extension 3310.

A native of Durgapur, India, Burman began playing the tabla when he was six years old and has studied with Pandi Shyamal Bose, of Calcutta, who is a distinguished tabla player in India. Burman has performed with many musicians in various locations throughout the world. He recently collaborated and toured with Bela Fleck and was a guest artist on the Flecktone’s Grammy award-winning album, “Outbound.”

His most recent tour, “East Meets Jazz,” included Victor Bailey from the group Weather Report, Randy Brecker from the Brecker Brothers, Howard Levy from the Flecktones and Jerry Goodman from the Mahavishnu Orchestra, along with several other musicians.

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls more than 2,900 undergraduate students in 50 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg. A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia.
