CONTACT: Beth L. Lorow Messiah College to present Christmas concert in Harrisburg and Grantham
GRANTHAM, Pa. (Nov. 11, 2005) — For the second year, the Messiah College Department of Music will present its annual Christmas concert in Harrisburg and on the college’s Grantham campus. The first performance will be held on Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. in St. Lawrence Chapel, 110 State St., Harrisburg. Admission to the concert is free, but a $10 donation is suggested. A second performance will be held on Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel, located on the college’s Grantham campus. This popular Christmas concert will feature a variety of Messiah College music groups, including the Women’s Ensemble, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Men’s Ensemble, Brass Choir and the Handbell Choir (at the campus concert only). For the campus concert, all tickets are unreserved seating and cost $6 for adults and $3 for students, children and senior citizens. The Concert Choir, under the direction of Linda Tedford, director of choral arts at Messiah College, will perform the following works during the Christmas concert: “Holy Lord of Hosts” by Elizabeth Posgate, “Praise Him” by Cameroon Processional, “O Nata Lux” by Morton Lauridsen, “Three Carols” by Peter Warlock, “O Little Town” arranged by Stephen Paulus, and “Children, Go Where I Send Thee” arranged by Norman Luboff. Comprised of 53 singers, the Concert Choir will participate in a European tour in May, visiting Vienna, Salzburg and Prague. They will also be featured in performances with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, Susquehanna Chorale and Lebanon Valley Alumni Chorale this year. The Concert Choir recently released a new CD titled, “In Remembrance,” in memory of Rodney J. Sawatsky, past president of Messiah College. The Women’s Ensemble, under the direction of Katrina Peddell, assistant professor of music, is comprised of 60 female vocalists. During the Christmas concert, the ensemble will perform “A Christmas Alleluia,” “Elizabeth’s ‘Ave,’” “Mary Speaks,” “What Child,” “Noel Nouvelet,” “Ubers Gebirg’ Maria geht,” and “Puer nobis nascitur.” The Men’s Ensemble, made up of 19 male vocalists and under the direction of Tedford, will perform “Of the Father’s Love Begotten,” “Advent” by Craig Courtney, “In the Bleak Mid-winter” arranged by Lary Nickel, and “Rise Up, Shepherd and Follow” arranged by Mark Hayes. The Chamber Singers, a select group of 15 singers conducted by Tedford, will perform a cappella pieces, including “Lo How a Rose e’er Blooming” arranged by Walter Pelz, “Catalonian Carol” arranged by Dale Warland, and “Ding Dong Merrily” arranged by Carolyn Jennings. The 20-member Brass Choir, under the direction of William Stowman, chair of the music department at Messiah College, will be performing a traditional Christmas repertoire and music for antiphonal brass. The Concert Handbell Choir, comprised of 12 ringers and under the direction of Keith Roden, instructor of music at Messiah College and music teacher at Boiling Springs High School, will be performing at the campus Christmas concert only.
