GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 9, 2006) – Critically acclaimed author Anne Applebaum will give a lecture, “The Gulag: What We Know Now and Why It Matters,” on March 2 at 7 p.m. in Alexander Auditorium in Frey Academic Building on Messiah College’s Grantham campus.  Applebaum will trace the history and motives of the former Soviet Union in establishing the Gulag, its notorious system of labor camps for political prisoners.  The event is free and open to the public.  A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.

Applebaum is considered one of the most knowledgeable voices on democracy, freedom, human rights, globalization and politics in pluralistic societies.  She has been recognized with the Charles Douglas-Home Memorial Trust Award for her journalistic work in the ex-Soviet Union, and she won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction for her book, “Gulag: A History.”  In addition, she also wrote “Between East and West: Across the Borderlands of Europe.” She currently serves on the editorial board of the “Washington Post.” 

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls more than 2,900 undergraduate students in 50 majors.
