April concerts at Messiah College showcase orchestra, opera and vocal, handbell and jazz ensembles


GRANTHAM, Pa. (April 6, 2006) —The Messiah College School of the Arts will present a series of concerts between April 26-30 on the college’s Grantham campus. All concerts are free and open to the public. For more information, call (717) 796-1800, extension 3310.

Concert highlights

April 26, 8 p.m., Miller Auditorium, Climenhaga Fine Arts Center

The Messiah College Women’s Ensemble, Men’s Ensemble and Chamber Singers will perform a

concert featuring a number of well-known pieces. Under the direction of Katrina Peddell, the Women’s Ensemble will perform six pieces. The Chamber Singers, a select vocal ensemble comprised of 16 singers, and the Men’s Ensemble are under the direction of Linda Tedford. The groups will perform a variety of works, including “David’s Lamentation,” “None Other Lamb,” “Just As the Tide Was Flowing,” “Flower of Beauty” and “This Song Not Valid Without Coupon.”  

April 27, 8 p.m., Miller Auditorium, Climenhaga Fine Arts Center

The Messiah College Handbell Ensemble, composed of 12 ringers, will perform a spring

concert under the direction of Keith T. Roden. The concert will feature a variety of sacred and secular handbell music. Musical pieces will include “Hallelujah Chorus” from the “Mount of Olives,” “A New Gloria,” “Meditation on Beautiful Savior,” “Rough Riders,” “Ascension,” “Synergy,” “Commemoration of the Spirit” and selections from “Beauty and the Beast.”

April 28, 8 p.m., Miller Auditorium, Climenhaga Fine Arts Center

The Messiah College JazzONE and JazzTWO Ensembles, under the direction of William Stowman, and

the Messiah College JazzSINGERS Ensemble, under the direction of Elaine Henderson, will present an evening of jazz standards and contemporary arrangements for jazz ensembles and will feature Artist in Residence Tim Warfield performing arrangements of his own compositions. Warfield’s works include “A Cool Blue,” selected as one of the top ten recordings of the year in a 1995 New York Times critic’s poll, and his 1998 recording “Gentle Warrior,” proclaiming him possibly the most powerful tenor saxophonist of his generation. The three ensembles’ performance selections will include “The Very Thought of You,” “Here, There, and Everywhere” and “Smack Dab in the Middle.”

April 29, 8 p.m., Miller Auditorium, Climenhaga Fine Arts Center

The Messiah College Symphony Orchestra will perform its annual spring concert. Under the direction of

Timothy Dixon, the program will feature “Symphony No. 2 in D Major,” by Johannes Brahms, as well as works by Anton Dvorak.

April 30, 3 p.m., Miller Auditorium, Climenhaga Fine Arts Center

The annual President’s Concert will feature the Messiah College Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble,

both under the direction of Bradley Genevro. The Symphonic Winds, comprised of approximately 90 players, will perform “Sun Dance,” “Two Sketches,” “Ave Maria” and “March Grandioso.” The 45-player Wind Ensemble will be performing two works of Wagner, “Lohengrin (Act III Introduction)” and “Rienzi Overture.” They will also play “Polovetisian March,” “Hallelujah Unto God’s Almighty Son” and “Wedding Dance.”  

April 30, 8 p.m., Miller Auditorium, Climenhaga Fine Arts Center

“A Night of Opera” will be presented by students currently enrolled in an Opera Workshop course. They will

perform beautiful and engaging scenes from various operas. Damian Savarino is the course instructor and stage director and Rebecca Wilt is the music director.
