About The Decemberists The Decemberists formed in 2001 and derived their name from the Russian Decembrist Revolt and the atmosphere associated with the month of December. Their songs range from upbeat pop to instrumentally lush ballads accompanied by lyrics that carry a storytelling approach. The band consists of lead singer-songwriter Colin Meloy; multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk; keyboardist Jenny Conlee; bassist Nate Query; and drummer John Moen. The band has released four albums, “Castaways and Cutouts” and “Her Majesty” in 2003; “Picaresque” in 2005; and their newest release, “The Crane Wife,” in 2006. “The Crane Wife,” which is the band’s major label debut, was voted favorite album of 2006 by NPR listeners. "TheMagazine" also announced The Decemberists as band of the year and featured them on the cover of their 2006 year in review issue.
