Race relations expert Tim Wise lectures at Messiah College

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 5, 2007) — Prominent anti-racist writer and activist Tim Wise will lecture at Messiah College on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel on the college's Grantham campus.  Wise's lecture, "Race, White Privilege and the Struggle for Equality," is sponsored by the college's Office of Multicultural Programs and part of an ongoing effort to encourage thoughtful self-examination of stereotypes, generalizations and assumptions instilled by cultural influences in relation to diversity and race relations.  The event is free and open to the public.

About Tim Wise

Coined "one of the most brilliant, articulate and courageous critics of white privilege in the nation" by University of Pennsylvania author and professor Michael Dyson, Wise is a sought-after speaker, trainer, consultant and columnist.  He writes regularly for the ZNet Commentary program, a web service that disseminates essays by prominent, progressive educators, and has authored two books – "White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son" and "Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White."  In 2001, Wise received the British Diversity Award for best feature essay on race issues.  He also serves as race and ethnicity editor for "LIP" magazine.  In addition, Wise has served on the faculty in the School of Social Work at Smith College and Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he trained journalists to eliminate racial bias in reporting.  He was also an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism.
