GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 23, 2007) — Speakers Barry Callen and Alan and Eleanor Kreider will give lectures on peace and Anabaptism in modern times as a part of Messiah College’s annual Schrag lectures, as well as on behalf of the Sider Institute for Anabaptist, Pietist, and Wesleyan Studies. The Kreiders will speak for the college’s Sider Institute on March 13 at 9:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. The Schrag lecture, given by Callen, will be March 15 at 7:30 p.m. Those wishing to attend may hear the evening lectures in Alexander Auditorium, room 110 of Frey Hall, on the college’s Grantham campus. The Kreiders’ morning message will be given in Brubaker Auditorium in Eisenhower Campus Center. All the lectures are free and open to the public; no tickets are necessary.

Callen’s address, the ninth of the college’s annual Schrag lectures, is titled “Current Applications of Old, 'Radical' Ideas.” A celebrated author and editor of more than twenty-five books, including “God as Loving Grace,” Callen is also an ordained minister in the Church of God and has been active in church mission projects in 10 different countries. He is currently university professor emeritus of Christian studies at Anderson University.

In their related addresses, the Kreiders will speak on “Peacemaking Worship: Aligning Ourselves with God’s Story” during the campus’ morning chapel time in Brubaker Auditorium. Their evening address, “God’s Mission Is Peace,” will be followed by light refreshments for attendees. The Kreiders are former missionaries with the Mennonite Board of Missions and now serve on the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary’s faculty in Elkhart, Ind.

About the Schrag Lectures

The Schrag lectures take their name from the late Martin Schrag, professor emeritus of church history, and Dorothy Schrag, assistant professor emerita of music. Both held professorships at Messiah College for a number of years and participated actively in the community of the Brethren in Christ Church. The annual lectures highlight aspects of historical Anabaptism as well as its present forms and contributions.

About the Sider Institute for Anabaptist, Pietist, and Wesleyan Studies

The Sider Institute was named in honor of E. Morris Sider, professor emeritus, and his wife Leone. Through lectures such as these, the Institute encourages scholarly research and interpretive study that enhance the understanding of the Anabaptist, Pietist and Wesleyan traditions. Together, these traditions make up the three theological roots of Messiah College, as well as those of its founding denomination, the Brethren in Christ Church.
