CONTACT: Beth L. Lorow Messiah College Jazz Singers present concert of jazz and popular classicsGRANTHAM, Pa. (March 21, 2007) — The Messiah College Jazz Singers will perform a selection of well-known jazz standards on April 14 at 7 p.m. in Poorman Recital Hall, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call the music department at (717) 766-2511, extension 3310. The 14-member ensemble is directed by Elaine Henderson, senior lecturer in music at Messiah College. The concert will include of a selection of well-known jazz standards including “Tuxedo Junction,” “Never Never Land” and “Smack Dab in the Middle.” The group will also break out into various smaller ensembles to perform sextet, quartet and trio arrangements of “Route 66,” “Blue Skies,” “Paper Moon” and other songs of the classic jazz repertoire. Many of the songs will be accompanied by a combo, but there are a few a cappella arrangements of some beautiful ballads, such as “But Beautiful” and Detour Ahead.” The department of music at Messiah College is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The department offers majors in music and music education. Through a variety of junior and senior recitals and choral and instrumental ensembles, students gain performing experience both on- and off-campus. Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls more than 2,800 undergraduate students in 60 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg.
