layer of tubes, Whitish to Light Tan context
, no stem, and
a smoke-colored or black Pore surface

 

1. Pileus surface azonate or faintly zonate

    2. Basidiocarp less than 1 cm thick; pores 6-7 per mm............................................... Bjerkandera adusta

    2. Basidiocarp greater than 1 cm thick; pores 2-5 per mm

        3. Dark layer in context at base of tubes; occurring on various hardwoods .................... Bjerkandera fumosa

        3. Dark layer absent at base of tubes; almost always on willow (Salix); smells of anise
            when fresh..................................................................................... .....................Trametes suaveolens

1. Pileus surface distinctly zonate; decidedly hairy

    4. Pileus surface strongly zonate with many narrow differently colored bands...................... Trametes versicolor

    4. Pileus not so strongly zonate, pileus grayish white to gray to brownish with zones nearly unicolorous
        in any given specimen except for darker brown marginal zones.......................................... Trametes hirsuta
